ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — The UAE has launched a new national award to recognize universities, educators and partners that are helping shape the country’s higher education and scientific research sector.
The UAE Award in Higher Education was introduced by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research under the patronage of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, deputy prime minister, minister of foreign affairs and chairman of the Education, Human Development and Community Development Council.
Sheikh Abdullah said investment in people remains central to the UAE’s future vision. He said higher education is one of the main drivers of a competitive, sustainable knowledge economy and added that the award is meant to encourage innovation in learning and research.
He said the initiative reflects the UAE’s effort to strengthen academic institutions, empower national talent and support high-quality scientific research. According to him, the country sees universities and research centers as key places where future progress is being shaped.
The award is intended to highlight leading institutional and individual achievements while promoting a culture of innovation across the sector. It also aims to connect academic and research output more closely with the UAE’s national priorities.
Officials said the program will support stronger ties between universities and the private sector through scholarships, work experience programs and applied research linked to industry needs. The goal is to turn academic work into practical solutions with economic value.
The award is divided into four categories. Leading Universities and Higher and Vocational Education Institutions will honor institutions that set standards for excellence. Transformative Higher Education Projects will recognize initiatives that prepare the sector for future challenges. Higher Education Pioneers will celebrate individual contributions to education, research and entrepreneurship. Influential Higher Education Partners will recognize leaders and institutions that make a measurable national impact through collaboration.
Judging will focus on real outcomes, sustainability, future readiness and the broader social and economic value of each entry. The evaluation framework will also consider partnerships with industry, applied scientific research and the use of emerging technologies.
Winners will receive financial prizes and honorary recognition. The first application cycle opens from July through September 2026, with results expected in the fourth quarter of the year.
Educational institutions and individuals can find nomination details and terms on the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research website. Further updates on the award process are expected later this year.
