Sharjah ruler creates Wadi Al Qarha Nature Reserve, sets protections

SHARJAH- Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued an Emiri decree establishing the “Wadi Al Qarha Nature Reserve” in the emirate.

The decree stipulates that the reserve will be created with boundaries defined according to an approved map.

It prohibits activities and practices that could damage the ecosystem, harm wildlife or natural habitats, or affect the area’s aesthetic value. Specifically, the decree bans hunting, transporting, killing or harming wildlife, unless permitted under environmental regulations issued by the competent authority.

The introduction of non-native species into the reserve is also prohibited, along with any actions that damage geological formations or areas that serve as habitats or breeding grounds. Polluting the soil, water or air within the reserve is banned.

Other prohibited activities include military maneuvers, shooting exercises, cutting or removing trees and plants, and any actions that may cause soil erosion. Recreational or sporting activities that could harm wildlife are also not allowed.

The decree further bans construction, road-building, vehicle use, and agricultural, industrial or commercial activities within the reserve without a permit from the competent authority.

It also prohibits any activity that could disrupt the natural balance of the reserve.

The decree references Federal Law No. 24 of 1999 on the Protection and Development of the Environment and its amendments, which mandate the protection of all living organisms within the reserve, including birds and other species that use it for resting, breeding or habitation.

Activities in surrounding areas that could affect the reserve’s environment are also restricted and require prior approval from the competent authority.

Violators of the decree will face penalties under Federal Law No. 24 of 1999 and will be required to cover compensation and the cost of repairing any damage, as determined by the competent authority.

The authority will oversee the management of the reserve and coordinate with the municipal council and relevant municipality. It will also work with Sharjah Police to enforce regulations within the reserve.

The chairman of the competent authority will issue the necessary administrative decisions to implement the decree.
