ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates: UAE motorists can take part in a national road-safety campaign that offers eligible drivers the chance to have four black points removed from their driving records.
The Ministry of Interior’s annual Day Without Accidents initiative will be held Aug. 31, with registration opening Aug. 17. The campaign is being coordinated by the Federal Traffic Council and police authorities across the UAE.
The initiative coincides with the start of the new school year, when traffic volumes typically increase around schools, residential communities and major roads.
How to register
Motorists can register through the campaign link shared by the Ministry of Interior’s official social media account, @MOIUAE.
Participants can access the registration process by scanning the QR code featured in the campaign’s Instagram post and signing in through UAE Pass.
Drivers must agree to the campaign’s safety commitments, complete the pledge and comply with the stated terms and conditions.
Once the registration process is completed, participants will receive a certificate by email using the address associated with their UAE Pass account.
How can four black points be removed?
Drivers who meet the campaign requirements can qualify for the cancellation of four black points from their driving record.
The safety commitments include:
- Keeping a safe distance from other vehicles.
- Giving priority to pedestrians.
- Wearing seat belts.
- Following posted speed limits.
- Avoiding mobile phone use and other distractions while driving.
- Giving way to emergency vehicles.
- Remaining within designated lanes.
- Checking that the vehicle is safe and roadworthy before setting off.
The campaign is intended to encourage motorists to maintain these practices beyond the designated day.
Why Aug. 31 matters
The campaign falls on the first day of the 2026-27 school year, putting additional emphasis on caution around school zones and residential areas.
With students returning to classrooms, drivers are being urged to allow additional time for their journeys and watch carefully for children, pedestrians and school buses.
For families driving children to school, authorities’ safety guidance is particularly relevant during morning and afternoon peak periods.
What are UAE black points?
Black points are penalties recorded against a driver’s licence following certain traffic violations. The number assigned depends on the offence.
A driver can accumulate up to 24 black points. Reaching the maximum can result in further legal consequences, including possible licence suspension or confiscation depending on the circumstances and applicable regulations.
The Day Without Accidents campaign provides eligible motorists with an opportunity to reduce their existing total by four points, provided they meet all campaign conditions.
Which UAE traffic violations carry four black points?
UAE traffic rules assign four black points to a range of violations. These include:
- Driving against traffic.
- Using a handheld mobile phone while driving.
- Dangerous reversing or sudden swerving.
- Failing to maintain a safe distance.
- Failing to wear a seat belt.
- Allowing a passenger to travel without a seat belt.
- Driving a vehicle with expired registration or an expired driving licence.
- Driving an unlicensed vehicle.
- Entering a road without ensuring it is clear.
- Failing to follow instructions from a traffic officer.
- Driving below a prescribed minimum speed, where applicable.
- Using a vehicle for an unauthorised purpose.
- Carrying passengers in a vehicle that is not licensed for passenger transport.
- Exceeding the permitted passenger capacity in passenger transport vehicles.
- Motorcyclists failing to wear a helmet.
- Driving with expired tires.
- Driving at night without required lights.
- Driving in fog without lights or contrary to instructions from authorities.
- Making turns from unauthorised locations or turning in the wrong direction.
- Carrying dangerous or unauthorised loads on a light vehicle.
- Using a horn or vehicle sound system in a disturbing manner.
Additional four-point violations apply to certain heavy vehicles, taxis, trailers, motorcades and passenger-transport operations.
A timely reminder for UAE motorists
The campaign comes as UAE roads prepare for increased activity following the summer break. Motorists are encouraged to treat the Aug. 31 initiative as a reminder to maintain safe driving habits throughout the year.
Drivers planning to participate should complete registration through official Ministry of Interior channels and review the campaign’s conditions before Aug. 31.
