UAE rulers order release of thousands of prisoners ahead of Ramadan

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates:  UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the release of 1,440 prisoners ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and pledged to settle financial obligations arising from their sentences, state media- WAM- reported Tuesday.

The move comes as part of an annual tradition in the United Arab Emirates, where leaders grant clemency during Ramadan, a month associated with forgiveness, compassion and charity in the Muslim world.

In Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, ordered the release of 1,856 prisoners of various nationalities from correctional and punitive establishments in the emirate. Authorities said legal procedures were under way to implement the directive.

In Sharjah, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council member and ruler of Sharjah, pardoned 738 inmates in recognition of good conduct.

In Ajman, Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council member and ruler of Ajman, ordered the release of 134 prisoners of various nationalities selected for good behaviour. Police said the measure would allow them to reunite with their families.

In Fujairah, Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council member and ruler of Fujairah, ordered the release of 125 inmates based on good conduct.

In Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council member and ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, ordered the release of 407 prisoners and pledged to settle their financial liabilities. Authorities said implementation procedures had begun.

The annual pardons aim to provide inmates an opportunity to start anew while easing hardships on their families and promoting social cohesion. These emirate-level pardons, announced Feb. 18, 2026, as Ramadan begins, align with longstanding UAE traditions of clemency during the holy month, providing relief to families and promoting rehabilitation and societal harmony.
