Sharjah launches campaign to cut single-use waste

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates — Sharjah has launched a public awareness campaign aimed at reducing the use of single-use products and encouraging residents to adopt more sustainable daily habits.

The initiative, titled Sharjah Deserves the Best, will run until Dec. 31, 2026. It is intended to push individuals, families and businesses toward greener choices and reduce the amount of waste generated by disposable items.

The campaign is being led by the Department of Municipal Affairs in partnership with the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, BEEAH Group, the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, the Sharjah Private Education Authority and other government entities.

Organizers say the effort is meant to make sustainability a regular part of daily life by promoting responsible consumption, protecting natural resources and encouraging the use of reusable alternatives.

At the launch event, officials unveiled an interactive platform with educational displays, awareness sessions and activities designed for people of all ages. Visitors were shown practical ways to cut waste, reuse items and make environmentally responsible choices.

Reusable shopping bags were distributed in shopping centers as part of the campaign. Awareness messages will also be shared through traditional media, digital platforms and community events throughout the year.

Sultan Mohammed bin Huwaiden Al Ketbi, chairman of the Department of Municipal Affairs, said the campaign is aimed at reducing dependence on disposable products while building habits that support the environment over the long term.

He said even small changes, such as switching to reusable items, can help conserve resources and strengthen environmental responsibility across the community.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, director of the department, said the campaign will use field activities, educational programs, media outreach and digital content tailored to different age groups to reach as many people as possible.

He said the initiative reflects Sharjah’s broader goal of balancing development with environmental protection and improving quality of life for residents.

The campaign comes as UAE emirates continue stepping up efforts to reduce plastic and disposable waste. Further community events and awareness activities are expected as the yearlong drive continues.
