Toyota Corolla hits 1.22 million global sales in 2013

DUBAI—Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) today(May 12th) announced that global sales of the Corolla has reached 1.22 million units in 2013 according to the company’s internal data based on individual vehicle sales reporting from its distributors. The 5 per cent year-over-year increase confirms the Corolla’s perennial popularity among loyal customers in approximately 150 countries and regions around the world. Corolla’s worldwide cumulative sales since its introduction in 1966 topped 40.72 million units as of February 2014, making it the all-time best -selling vehicle model.

According to Nobuyuki Negishi, Chief Representative of Middle East & North Africa Representative Office, Toyota Motor Corporation, “The Corolla represents the international face of Toyota and touches millions of people across the globe every day. The 2014 Corolla continues this successful evolution to add to the Corolla’s remarkable success story over the years.”

Based on Toyota’s analysis of Polk new vehicle registration data from IHS Automotive, which captures 96 percent of the global new vehicle volumes, the Corolla is the world’s best-selling vehicle model for 2013 with global registrations of 1,098,524 units.

This figure includes Corolla sedan and other variations in name such as Corolla Axio, Corolla Altis and Corolla EX 4-door sedans. The subscripts “Axio” “Altis” and “EX” denote trim levels of the 4-door Corolla sedan sold in various global regions, including Japan. Also included are the Corolla-badged Fielder and Rumion 5-door wagons. Based on Toyota’s analysis, various competitive claims based on “single nameplate” registrations may have excluded data for Corolla Axio, Corolla Altis, Corolla EX, Corolla Fielder and Corolla Rumion, which are identified and marketed as Corolla sedans and wagons.

From a Middle East sales perspective, the look of the all new Corolla which was launched at the end of 2013 added to its appeal and popularity resulting in Corolla sales reaching 106,388 units last year, a 27% increase as compared to 2012. Making a strong design statement with its unique visual signature which is highlighted by a more elegant and sportier image, the Corolla signifies Toyota’s brand evolution which has been driven recently by more design-focused product launches. It builds on the model’s legendary reputation for reliability and durability with significant enhancements in every aspect of its design and engineering to ensure complete customer satisfaction.

The Corolla, currently produced at 15 plants worldwide, accounts for one in five vehicles sold in Toyota’s 76-year history. In 1997, the Corolla became the world’s best-selling nameplate, with global cumulative sales exceeding 22.65 million units. More than a million units have been sold each year since 2002.

The history of the ever-evolving Corolla, filled with examples of technology and quality improvement, is emblematic of Toyota’s efforts to anticipate customer needs and provide even better cars.
