LONDON — A Saudi citizen was stabbed during an attempted robbery in London’s Mayfair district, with valuables including a luxury watch reportedly targeted in the incident.
The attack occurred at about 10:07 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, in Berkeley Square, an area of central London near Oxford Street.
Emergency medical crews and police responded to the scene. The victim was treated before being taken to a major trauma center.
Initial concerns about the severity of the injuries were later eased, with British police indicating that the victim was receiving treatment and that his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Suspect arrested at scene
Police arrested a 58-year-old man in connection with the incident.
He was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, possessing a bladed weapon and attempted robbery. The suspect was also taken to hospital after suffering minor injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.
Videos shared on social media showed a significant police and emergency-services presence around Berkeley Square following the incident. Authorities have not indicated that the incident poses an ongoing threat to the wider public.
