UAE’s Wadi Wurayah Earns UNESCO World Heritage Status

FUJAIRAH, United Arab Emirates — One of the UAE’s most remarkable natural destinations has received global recognition after Wadi Wurayah National Park in Fujairah was officially inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.

The designation marks a major milestone for the UAE, making Wadi Wurayah the country’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its outstanding natural value and adding another internationally protected landmark to the nation’s growing heritage portfolio.

A landmark for nature tourism

Nestled within the Hajar Mountains, Wadi Wurayah is widely regarded as one of the UAE’s most important ecological reserves. The protected landscape is known for its year-round freshwater pools, dramatic mountain scenery and the country’s only permanent natural waterfall.

The reserve has long attracted hikers, wildlife enthusiasts and eco-tourism visitors seeking a different side of the UAE beyond its cities and coastline.

Unlike many wadis in the region, Wadi Wurayah supports permanent freshwater ecosystems that sustain a rich variety of native wildlife throughout the year.

A biodiversity hotspot

Environmental experts consider the reserve one of the Arabian Peninsula’s most significant biodiversity areas.

The protected landscape provides habitat for rare mammals, birds, reptiles, insects and native plant species, many of which depend on the reserve’s freshwater sources. UNESCO’s recognition reflects both its ecological importance and its contribution to conserving unique desert and mountain ecosystems.

The reserve also preserves geological formations and natural habitats that have evolved over thousands of years, making it valuable for scientific research as well as environmental conservation.

What UNESCO recognition means

World Heritage inscription places Wadi Wurayah among the world’s most significant natural sites and is expected to strengthen international conservation efforts, scientific collaboration and sustainable tourism opportunities.

The recognition also reinforces the UAE’s broader commitment to protecting natural heritage while promoting responsible tourism and environmental sustainability.

Officials said the designation reflects years of conservation work involving national and local authorities, environmental specialists and cultural institutions.

Planning a visit

Located about two hours from Dubai, Wadi Wurayah offers visitors an opportunity to experience a very different landscape from the UAE’s urban centers.

The reserve is known for its rugged mountain valleys, freshwater streams and scenic viewpoints, particularly during the cooler months between October and April. Because it is a protected area, visitors should check current access guidelines and follow environmental regulations designed to preserve the site’s fragile ecosystem.

Growing recognition for UAE destinations

The UNESCO listing further strengthens the UAE’s position as a destination that combines cultural heritage with diverse natural landscapes.

Alongside its historic sites, deserts and coastline, Wadi Wurayah now joins an internationally recognized network of protected locations celebrated for their universal environmental significance, offering travelers another compelling reason to explore Fujairah and the eastern region of the UAE.
