Abu Dhabi, MIT team up to accelerate scientific breakthroughs and cancer care

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Abu Dhabi has announced two new partnerships with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology aimed at speeding up cancer research and turning scientific breakthroughs into treatments that can reach patients faster.

The agreements were unveiled during BIO International Convention 2026 in San Diego and bring together the Department of Health — Abu Dhabi, Future Health, and MIT’s Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research.

One partnership will connect the Department of Health with MIT’s Koch Institute to support artificial intelligence-driven oncology research, translational science and bioconvergence work. Officials said the goal is to combine Abu Dhabi’s health ecosystem with MIT’s research strength to develop and test new solutions in cancer care.

In a separate move, Future Health has joined the MIT-led BioConvergence Cancer Alliance as a founding member. The alliance includes more than 1,000 scientists, engineers and researchers, creating a larger network for collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, undersecretary of the Department of Health — Abu Dhabi, said cancer remains one of the most pressing health challenges and requires cooperation across disciplines and countries. She said the partnerships reflect Abu Dhabi’s push to build a connected system that links research, technology, talent and healthcare innovation.

Matthew Vander Heiden, director of MIT’s Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, said the collaboration will help expand joint research efforts and support faster scientific progress in oncology and precision medicine.

Abu Dhabi has been positioning itself as a regional hub for advanced healthcare and life sciences, with growing investment in research, clinical capabilities and innovation partnerships. The new agreements add to that strategy by linking local infrastructure with global academic expertise.

The partnerships are expected to support earlier detection, more personalized treatments and stronger patient outcomes, while also helping attract scientific talent to the emirate. Further work under the agreements is expected to develop through Abu Dhabi’s health and research ecosystem in the months ahead.
