Dubai Police reveal details of five-year investigation into alleged international drug network

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Dubai Police have disclosed new information about one of the force’s most extensive anti-narcotics investigations, describing a five-year intelligence operation that led to the conviction of a man accused of coordinating an international drug trafficking network operating beyond the UAE’s borders.

According to Dubai Police, the investigation relied on years of intelligence gathering, cross-border cooperation and evidence collected from several countries before the case was brought before the UAE courts.

Authorities said the suspect allegedly managed large-scale narcotics shipments across international waters, with criminal links extending to parts of Africa and the Middle East. Investigators said the operation required close coordination with foreign law enforcement agencies and multiple overseas missions to trace the network’s activities.

The case also drew on evidence connected to previous international anti-smuggling operations, including the seizure of a significant heroin shipment intercepted off the East African coast. Dubai Police said the combined evidence ultimately supported the successful prosecution of the suspect in the UAE.

Drug trafficking methods are changing

Police warned that drug trafficking networks have become increasingly reliant on technology, making investigations more complex than traditional street-level enforcement.

Authorities said many criminal groups now use encrypted messaging applications, digital payments and GPS coordinates to arrange narcotics deliveries, reducing direct contact between buyers and sellers and making transactions harder to detect.

Dubai Police also revealed that specialized cybercrime teams have shut down more than 1,290 websites and online accounts allegedly used to advertise or facilitate drug-related activity. Investigators continue to monitor digital platforms while working to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Focus on rehabilitation alongside enforcement

Officials said combating drug crime extends beyond arrests and prosecutions, noting that addiction can often lead individuals into drug distribution to finance continued substance abuse.

Under UAE law, people experiencing drug addiction may voluntarily seek treatment or be referred by eligible family members without facing criminal prosecution under specific legal provisions, provided they meet the conditions established by the legislation.

Police said rehabilitation programs generally include an initial treatment phase followed by ongoing medical supervision, counseling and periodic drug testing to support long-term recovery.

International cooperation remains a priority

Dubai Police said the investigation highlights the importance of intelligence sharing between countries in tackling transnational organized crime.

Authorities also pointed to the role of the UAE’s National Anti-Narcotics Agency in strengthening cooperation with international partners, enhancing enforcement efforts and supporting legislative measures aimed at disrupting drug trafficking networks operating across borders.

For residents, officials continue to stress the importance of reporting suspected drug-related activity through official Dubai Police channels and encouraging individuals struggling with addiction to seek professional treatment as early as possible.
