Saudi Arabia forecasts heavy thunderstorms and flash flood risk across several regions

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Meteorology (NCM) has warned of moderate to heavy thunderstorms, hail and the potential for flash flooding across several parts of the Kingdom on Wednesday, urging residents to remain alert as unstable weather conditions develop.

According to the latest forecast, the most significant weather is expected in parts of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha and Makkah, where heavy rainfall may be accompanied by hail and localized flooding.

Strong, dust-raising winds are also forecast to affect portions of the Eastern Province, Riyadh and Madinah, which could reduce visibility in exposed areas.

Marine conditions also expected to deteriorate

The NCM said conditions over the Red Sea will vary throughout the day, with northwesterly to westerly winds affecting the northern and central sections, while southwesterly to northwesterly winds are forecast over southern waters.

Wave heights are expected to range from 0.5 meters to more than 2 meters, with sea conditions fluctuating between calm and choppy depending on location.

Across the Arabian Gulf, winds are forecast to shift direction during the evening as weather systems move across the region. Wave heights are also expected to exceed 2 meters in some areas, creating choppy conditions for small vessels.

Residents urged to exercise caution

The latest advisory comes as parts of southwestern Saudi Arabia continue to experience seasonal summer rainfall driven by convective cloud formation over mountainous terrain.

Authorities typically advise residents to avoid flood-prone valleys and low-lying areas during periods of heavy rain, while motorists are encouraged to drive cautiously on wet roads and monitor official weather updates before travelling.

The National Center for Meteorology is expected to continue monitoring conditions throughout the day and issue additional advisories if weather conditions intensify.
