Real Madrid defender doubtful for Champions League final

MADRID– Portuguese defender Pepe might not play in the final of the Champions League later this month after he tore his calf muscle, his club Real Madrid said Friday(May 9th).

QNA-pepe-real-madrid0905201The club said in a statement on its website that Pepe is out for 15 days, and faces a race to be fit in time for the final against arch-rivals Atletico Madrid. His understudy, French wonder kid Rafael Varane, is also injured and might not be fit come the final.

Pepe suffered the injury during the 1-1 draw on Wednesday. That result ended any realistic chance for Real Madrid to win the league this season.

Pepe is the latest addition to a long injury list that includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel de Maria, Alvaro Arbeloa and Jese. Midfielder Xabi Alonso will not feature in the final due to suspension. (QNA)
