Doha, Qatar: Travellers carrying controlled prescription medicines into or out of Qatar can now apply for the required approval online under a new system introduced by the country’s Ministry of Public Health.
The electronic service allows applicants to submit their requests, provide supporting documents, follow the progress of their applications and receive permits digitally.
The move is intended to make the approval process more convenient while maintaining Qatar’s regulatory controls over medicines subject to special restrictions.
Applications can be completed online
Travellers must access the service through Qatar’s National Authentication System, known as NAS, and complete the application electronically.
A valid medical prescription and other required supporting documents must be uploaded as part of the application. The Ministry of Public Health has also issued a user guide outlining the application process and identifying medicines covered by the controls.
Applications are reviewed by the Department of Pharmacy and Drug Control within the ministry.
Once all required documentation has been submitted, applications are expected to receive a decision within three working days.
Travellers should apply early
Despite the stated processing time, the ministry recommends submitting applications at least five working days before the planned departure date.
That extra time is important for travellers who may need to provide additional information or resolve an issue with their documentation before travelling.
The requirement applies to controlled medicines carried for personal use by people entering or leaving Qatar. Travellers should check whether their particular medication falls under Qatar’s controlled-medicine rules before departure rather than assuming that a prescription from their home country is sufficient.

People who need to carry regulated prescription medicines should have the required medical documentation ready before starting an application.

The online system does not remove Qatar’s existing pharmaceutical controls. Instead, it moves the approval process into a digital format, allowing applications and permits to be handled electronically.
For UAE and other GCC residents travelling to Qatar, checking the requirements before leaving is particularly important when carrying medicines that may be subject to additional restrictions.
Travellers should complete the application well ahead of their journey and ensure their prescription and supporting documents are valid and complete.
The new platform is now part of Qatar’s process for reviewing and approving requests to carry controlled medicines across its borders.
