ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — The UAE marked Union Pledge Day on Friday, honoring the historic 1971 gathering that led to the signing of the Declaration of the Union and the UAE Constitution.
President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan described the occasion as a defining moment in the country’s history and said the day is a reminder of the unity established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the Rulers who helped found the federation.
In a message on X, Sheikh Mohamed said the nation remains committed to the principles that shaped its foundation and continue to guide its future.
Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also marked the day with a message of national pride. He shared a video featuring the late Sheikh Zayed, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and other founding leaders.
Sheikh Mohammed said the day is a chance to renew the pledge to protect the Union, strengthen its foundations and preserve the country’s achievements for future generations.
Union Pledge Day was officially designated in July 2024 and is now observed each year on July 18. It joins other major UAE national occasions, including Flag Day, Commemoration Day and Eid Al Etihad.
The date recalls the meeting on July 18, 1971, when the future founders signed the declaration that set the stage for the creation of the UAE later that year.
As the country marks 55 years since that milestone, leaders are using the occasion to reaffirm the values of unity, loyalty and national cohesion that remain central to the UAE’s identity. Further official commemorations are expected across the country as the day is observed.
