ADIHEX 2026 Brings UAE Hunting and Equestrian History to Life

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates: Rare photographs, historical documents, traditional weapons and archival films are giving visitors to the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) 2026 a glimpse into the UAE’s longstanding traditions of falconry, hunting and equestrian sports.

The National Archives and Library is presenting the heritage collection at a distinctive ship-shaped pavilion, bringing together photographs, documents, films and publications connected to the country’s cultural history.

The pavilion is being presented in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters through its Police Heritage initiative.

Traditional weapons and military history

Among the exhibits are traditional weapons associated with forts, castles and ships, along with a traditional military cannon.

The collection provides visitors with an insight into aspects of the UAE’s earlier military and social history, while highlighting the importance of documenting and preserving traditional practices.

Historical material also explores the longstanding interest of the UAE’s rulers in falconry, horse racing and camel racing.

Archival records offer a glimpse into the past

The exhibition includes photographs and documentaries documenting hunting trips undertaken by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, illustrating his connection with traditional pursuits and the preservation of Emirati heritage.

Visitors can also view archived editions of Al Ittihad newspaper from 1973 and 1976. The pages provide a historical record of how traditional sports and heritage activities were reported more than five decades ago.

Books covering falconry, horses, camels and racing are available at the pavilion’s bookshop. Featured publications include Zayed: A Journey in Pictures, Al Adiyat, an encyclopedia focused on horses, and Al Maamoura, which examines camels.

The pavilion also introduces visitors to the Arabian Gulf Digital Archive, which provides access to historical material from across the region.

Heritage brought to younger visitors

The exhibition is also designed to engage children, with interactive screens featuring simulated horse and camel racing games.

The activities provide a more accessible way for younger visitors to explore traditional sports while learning about their place in Emirati culture.

During ADIHEX 2026, the National Archives and Library is also hosting lectures and cultural activities examining the history of hunting and equestrian traditions and their role in the UAE’s national identity.

The exhibition provides visitors with both physical artifacts and digital records that connect contemporary audiences with earlier generations, reinforcing the role of archives and cultural institutions in preserving the UAE’s heritage for the future.
