CNN Academy Abu Dhabi 2024 Set to Explore Artificial Intelligence in Journalism

Abu Dhabi/ Rafeek: Applications are open for CNN Academy Abu Dhabi, a groundbreaking initiative by the international news network aimed at nurturing and upskilling emerging talent in the region. Supported by the Creative Media Authority (CMA), this program focuses on multiplatform storytelling.

AI as the Core Theme

This year’s course will center around Artificial Intelligence, explored through a weekly masterclass series. Hosted by CNN experts, industry leaders, and academics, these masterclasses will delve into AI’s challenges and practicalities, including electronic ethics and cybersecurity. Participants will also learn how to build and test their own AI models.

Innovative Newsroom Simulation

AI will also be integral to CNN Academy’s innovative newsroom simulation, taking place in Abu Dhabi in December. Participants from around the world will engage in intensive training on investigative reporting fundamentals, guided by CNN’s top journalists and other industry experts.

Comprehensive 12-Week Course

The 12-week course in Abu Dhabi covers essential modules such as podcasting, social storytelling, and mobile journalism. Led by CNN’s global anchors, correspondents, and technical specialists, participants will gain crucial newsroom skills, including verification techniques, storyboarding, scriptwriting, and a deep understanding of journalistic ethics. These skills are taught through interactive workshops, masterclasses, and digital tutorials.

Expert Endorsements

Mohamed Dobay, Acting Director General of the Creative Media Authority, emphasized the importance of nurturing young talent and providing top-tier educational experiences. He highlighted this year’s AI focus as a testament to their commitment to advancing regional journalism.

Salma Arafa, a 2023 CNN Academy graduate, shared her success story: “My final project was featured on ‘Connect The World with Becky Anderson’. The connections and experiences were invaluable, and I secured an internship at the bureau after graduation. I encourage everyone to apply.”

Leadership Insights

Alireza Haji Hosseini, Deputy Bureau Chief, CNN Abu Dhabi & Director of CNN Academy, noted the program’s aim to prepare the next generation of journalists. He expressed excitement about this year’s focus on AI and the unique challenges it presents, making this iteration of CNN Academy particularly compelling.

Program Support and Outreach

Now in its fourth year, CNN Academy Abu Dhabi is supported by the Creative Lab, affiliated with the CMA. The lab helps identify potential students through outreach programs and provides essential resources and facilities, including the host venue in Abu Dhabi’s Yas Creative Hub, a hub for over 780 media and entertainment companies.

Eligibility and Application Information

CNN Academy Abu Dhabi is open to UAE nationals and residents over 21 with a background or interest in media and multiplatform storytelling. The academy also engages potential applicants through visits and virtual sessions with prominent universities, including Zayed University, Abu Dhabi University, New York University Abu Dhabi, American University of Sharjah, University of Khorfakkan, and United Arab Emirates University.
