Abu Dhbai, United Arab Emirates -Feb.03,2026 (GDM) A journey that began in 1975 with just 59 students, three teachers and a headmistress in a humble space at the India Social and Cultural Centre has grown into one of the UAE’s most respected community schools. As Abu Dhabi Indian School (ADIS) marks its golden jubilee this year, it celebrates not just five decades of academic excellence, but a journey deeply intertwined with the trust of the Indian expat community and the vision of the UAE’s founding leadership.
The school formally began its golden jubilee celebrations on Sunday with an inaugural ceremony at its campus under the theme “Legacy of ADIS: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.” The anniversary year was inaugurated by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, in the presence of Yusuffali M.A., chairman of the school.
Addressing the gathering, Sheikh Nahyan said, “I congratulate all of you on 50 successful years. This milestone reflects the central role of education in shaping both the present and the future of the United Arab Emirates.” He added that under President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE continues to place strong emphasis on education and youth advancement. Sheikh Nahyan also praised the school’s Board of Trustees for its leadership.
Yusuffali M.A. said the school represents the longstanding relationship between India and the UAE. “Abu Dhabi Indian School stands as a testament to the historic ties and enduring friendship,” he said. “The Indian community will always remain grateful to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for generously donating the land for this institution.”
That defining moment came in 1980 when community leaders, led by first Chairman Mohan Jashanmal and India’s first Ambassador to the UAE, S.E.H. Rizvi, approached Sheikh Zayed. He responded by gifting the prime plot on which the school proudly stands today.
“With the support of various government departments, the school shifted to its new premises later in 1980,” recollected Shabeer M.M., Education Committee Head. From 59 students, enrolment crossed 1,500 by the early 1980s, growing alongside Abu Dhabi.
Today, ADIS is a leading CBSE institution in the UAE, educating close to 5,000 students annually with a record of strong academic performance, sports, and cultural activities. It boasts an alumni network of over 180,000 professionals worldwide.
“ADIS has grown into one of the region’s leading educational institutions,” said Vice Chairman Sharad Bhandari.
The decades saw rapid evolution: a kindergarten complex opened in 1984, the first Grade 12 batch appeared for CBSE exams in 1987, and facilities expanded to include science and computer labs, a sports complex, and environmental initiatives like the ‘Prakriti’ nature club.
“Over five decades, the school has produced academic achievers, CBSE toppers, and accomplished professionals globally,” said Principal Dr Rishi Padegaonkar. “We remain committed to nurturing global citizens who think beyond borders, embrace innovation, and carry forward values of compassion and collaboration.”
The inaugural ceremony was attended by students, parents, alumni, and dignitaries including Dr Balaji Ramaswamy from the Indian Embassy, Prof Shantanu Roy of IIT Delhi – Abu Dhabi, and alumnus playback singer Benny Dayal.
With year-long celebrations planned, ADIS’s golden anniversary stands as a reminder of how a community initiative, backed by visionary leadership, grew into a landmark institution that continues to shape generations.
