Sharjah to Convert Truck Toll Gates into Electronic “Masaar” System

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (GDM)— Sharjah’s Executive Council has approved a resolution mandating the conversion of truck toll gates across the emirate into fully electronic gates under a system known as “Masaar”

Accroding to Emirates News Agency, the move aims to regulate truck movement, facilitate crossings and improve traffic flow and transport efficiency, as part of wider efforts to enhance road safety and advance digital transformation in public services.

Under the resolution, traditional toll booths used by heavy vehicles will be replaced with electronic gates, allowing trucks to pass through without stopping. Officials said the system is expected to reduce congestion and delays at key transit points and improve the reliability of freight movement.

The transition to Masaar aligns with Sharjah’s broader strategy to modernise transport infrastructure and manage traffic in line with the emirate’s urban growth and economic activity. Authorities have yet to announce implementation timelines or operational requirements for trucking companies.

The Council, chaired by Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, crown prince and deputy ruler of Sharjah, also reviewed the performance of government departments and agencies and discussed legislation aimed at improving institutional performance and service quality.

During the meeting, the Council approved a draft law regulating the Correctional and Punitive Institution in the emirate. The proposed legislation outlines the institution’s general policy and introduces programmes focused on security and rehabilitation while safeguarding the dignity and rights of inmates.

The draft law will be referred to the Sharjah Consultative Council for discussion and completion of the legislative process.
