Bedouin Speed Thrills: Riyadh’s Camel Crown Awaits

Riyadh, January 31, 2026 (GDM) — A total of 64 male and female camel riders from seven countries are competing in today’s races at the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Camel Festival 2026, vying for a substantial prize pool of SAR 940,000.

According to Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the festival’s organizing committee has structured the competition into five distinct heats: three 5-kilometer races for men and two 2-kilometer races for women. Demonstrating the sport’s growing international appeal, participants hail from Saudi Arabia, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Jordan, Bahrain, and Denmark. This blend of regional experts and global competitors underscores the festival’s vital role in preserving heritage while promoting cross-cultural exchange.

Camel racing holds profound significance in Saudi Arabia and the broader Arabian Peninsula, rooted in Bedouin nomadic traditions where camels were essential for survival in the harsh desert environment. Recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, it embodies values of endurance, loyalty, pride, and community celebration. Historically tied to tribal gatherings, weddings, and festivals, the sport inspires poetry, songs (like al-Heda’a herding calls), and social bonds. In modern Saudi Arabia, events like this festival revive and globalize these traditions under Vision 2030, blending ancient customs with organized competition to sustain cultural identity amid rapid change.

Last year’s edition (2025) saw intense competition, with Saudi owners dominating many categories. Notable highlights included Bahraini camels performing strongly in select rounds, and victories in various heats crowning elite breeders from the Gulf. The festival’s finals honored top performers, including standout wins in youth and mature camel races, reflecting the high stakes and breeding excellence on display.

This annual gathering at Al-Janadriyah not only awards prestige and substantial prizes but also reinforces national pride in Saudi heritage, drawing thousands to witness the thrilling spectacle of speed, strategy, and tradition in motion.
