Saudi Arabia gives $346 mn to Yemen

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Arabia has provided $346.6 million (1.3 billion riyals) to help address a major shortfall in salaries for government employees in Yemen, state media reported.

The support was ordered by King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and delivered through the Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction of Yemen (SDRPY), according to a statement cited by Arab News.

The SDRPY said in a statement posted on X that the payment forms part of the kingdom’s efforts to promote stability and development in Yemen.

It said the initiative aims to bolster economic, financial and monetary stability, strengthen government institutions, improve governance and transparency and support private sector-led growth.

Rashad Al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, thanked the Saudi leadership for what he described as continued backing for the Yemeni people.

He said the assistance reflected confidence in Yemen’s recovery efforts and in the government’s ability to rebuild national institutions and reinforce security and stability.

Al-Alimi added that Yemen’s partnership with Saudi Arabia represented “an important choice” for a more stable future and called for unified efforts to rebuild state institutions, improve living conditions and advance economic and social development.
