Qatar adds 3 sites to Islamic heritage list

DOHA, Qatar — Qatar Museums said Tuesday that three additional Qatari heritage sites have been inscribed on the Heritage List of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, known as Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO).

The newly listed sites — the village of Al Mafjar, the Ain Mohammed Village Site and the Al-Murwab Archaeological Site — bring the total number of Qatari locations on the ICESCO Heritage List to 10.

Previously recognized sites include Al Zubarah Fort, Al Jassasiya Site, the Old Palace at the National Museum of Qatar, Al Ruwais Mosque, Al Rekayat Fort, Barzan Towers and Al Khulaifi Heritage House.

Mohammed Saad Al Rumaihi, chief executive officer of Qatar Museums, described the inscription as a milestone in the country’s efforts to safeguard its heritage and connect future generations to Qatar’s historical narrative.

Qatar Museums said its International and Government Affairs Department and Architectural Conservation Department prepared and submitted the nomination files in line with ICESCO’s heritage criteria.

Dr. Fatema Hassan Al Sulaiti, head of the International and Government Affairs Department, said the inscription followed extensive technical preparation and coordination to demonstrate the sites’ “Outstanding Universal Value” within the broader history of the Islamic world.

Adel Al Moslamani, director of the Architectural Conservation Department, said the recognition underscores the need for continued archaeological research, documentation and conservation to ensure long-term preservation.

The latest inscriptions strengthen Qatar’s role in regional heritage preservation and reflect its ongoing engagement in international efforts to promote and protect shared cultural history.
