Sri Lankan wins gold Mercedes in Dubai draw

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates— A Dubai resident from a small fishing village in Sri Lanka has won a gold Mercedes-Benz S-Class 500 in a retail raffle, organisers said.

The prize was awarded as part of the Dubai Gold District’s “Shop & Win” campaign, which ran from Dec 11 to Feb 8. Shoppers received one raffle entry for every 500 dirhams (about $136) spent at participating gold, jewellery and watch outlets across the district.

The winner, who said he had used long-term savings to purchase gold, described the car as beyond anything he had imagined owning. He said he had not expected his investment to yield such a reward and called the win a life-changing moment.

Dubai Gold District said the campaign aimed to encourage consumer spending while reinforcing its position as a leading marketplace for precious metals and luxury goods.

The district hosts more than 1,000 retailers spanning gold, jewellery, perfumery, cosmetics and lifestyle products. In 2025, it has attracted shoppers from more than 147 nationalities, according to organisers.
