Dubai worker returns AED 50,000 gold in 3 days

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: An unusual yet uplifting episode in Dubai has drawn international attention after gold worth about AED 50,000 (₹12–13 lakh) was accidentally discarded with household waste — only to be recovered and returned to its Indian owners within three days.

A costly mistake

The incident reportedly began when Kamini Kannan, an Indian expatriate who had lived in Dubai for more than two decades and was visiting for a family wedding, transferred several gold items — four 22-carat coins and a 50-gram 24-carat gold bar — into a temporary pouch and left it on a dining table.

Later, during routine cleaning, her son Abhimanyu mistakenly assumed the pouch contained rubbish and threw it out with the household garbage. The loss was discovered the following morning, triggering panic over both the financial and sentimental value of the items.

Recovery through honesty and coordination

What could have been a permanent loss took a dramatic turn when a waste collection worker reportedly found the pouch while sorting trash. Instead of keeping the valuables, he handed them over to authorities.

Dubai Police then initiated follow-up procedures, using waste collection and building data to trace the source. Within three days, officers contacted the family and confirmed the recovery. The gold was subsequently returned.

The episode quickly gained traction online, widely shared as a feel-good example of civic integrity and administrative efficiency.

A story that resonated

Beyond the human drama of a near-miss financial loss, observers pointed to the incident as an illustration of how individual ethics can reinforce institutional systems. Social media users praised both the worker’s honesty and the swift coordination by authorities.

In a city often noted for its infrastructure and safety standards, the case has been cited as an example of how procedural diligence and personal responsibility can converge to produce unexpectedly positive outcomes.

For the Kannan family, what began as a distressing mistake ended as a remarkable recovery — a story that has resonated far beyond the Gulf.
