UAE and US Sign MoU to Enhance Intellectual Property Protection

Abu Dhabi: The UAE and the United States have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at bolstering cooperation in intellectual property (IP) rights protection. This strategic partnership will create a robust framework to foster innovation and creativity, contributing to economic growth and sustainable development in both nations.

The MoU was signed by H.E. Dr. Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for Intellectual Property at the UAE Ministry of Economy, and Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The signing was witnessed by H.E. Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy.

Key Points of the Agreement:

  • 5-Year Partnership: The collaboration will support American innovators by facilitating the registration of their U.S. patents in the UAE, ensuring they meet the required criteria.
  • Boost to Innovation: This initiative aligns with the UAE’s emphasis on creating an environment conducive to creativity and innovation, supporting the goals outlined in the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision.
  • Streamlined Patent Process: The partnership aims to provide a streamlined process for U.S. patent holders to obtain protection from the UAE Ministry of Economy, enhancing the security of their intellectual property.

H.E. Bin Touq emphasized the UAE’s commitment to fostering an innovative ecosystem with robust IP laws and regulations, attracting global talent and encouraging the establishment of creative businesses.

UAE’s Advanced IP Ecosystem:

The UAE is dedicated to protecting intellectual property through comprehensive laws on industrial property rights, trademarks, and copyrights. The Ministry of Economy recently launched an enhanced IP system with 11 initiatives to support the country’s transition to a knowledge-based economy.

  • Patent Hive Initiative: This program aims to increase patent approvals and stimulate innovation, targeting 6,000 new patents by 2026 through collaboration with research and academic institutions.
  • Technological Infrastructure: The UAE offers a robust tech infrastructure and various residence programs for entrepreneurs, investors, and talented individuals.

This MoU signifies a significant milestone in the UAE’s efforts to attract and retain global innovators, ensuring their creations are well-protected and supported in a thriving business environment.
