Sharjah Museums Department takes trip down memory lane

SHARJAH- The Sharjah Museums Department will mark the International Museum Day from May 18 to 24, through a special exhibition of artefacts that celebrate historical modes of transportation.

4Under the title “Museum Collections … make connections” the event will feature three exhibitions – at the Higher Colleges of Technology, Sahara Mall, and Arabian Centre, respectively.

In addition to highlighting historic modes of transportation, the exhibitions will also introduce visitors to route-finding devices through displays of local artefacts, Orientalist art, and transportation models from every era. The general public is also invited to enjoy dramatic performances that will bring historic travellers to life. A children’s workshop will allow the little ones to take part in educational activities related to the event.

Local ancient artefacts from participating museums will be showcased during the seven day exhibition. Participating institutions include Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, the Sharjah Arts Museum, Sharjah Archaeology Museum, Sharjah Heritage Museum, Sharjah Science Museum, Al Mahatta Museum, Maritime Museum, and Sharjah Classic car Museum.

6International Museum Day has been celebrated annually on May 18th since 1977. The event was established by the International Council of Museums to support communication between various museums and to recognise the role of museums as cultural and educational establishments that play a vital role in society. Sharjah Museums Department is keen on marking the event every year to highlight the cultural heritage of the Emirate and the nation, through its artefact collections and through the unique services it provides the public.
