Qatar Airways orders GE90-powered Boeing 777 Freighters

FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW – July 17, 2014 – Qatar Airways ordered four GE90-powered Boeing 777 Freighters, with an option for an additional four 777 Freighters. The firm engine order is valued at more than $250 million (USD) list price.

“The GE90 engine continues to outperform our expectations,” said Chaker Chahrour, vice president and general manager of Global Sales & Marketing at GE Aviation. “The engine was enhanced to reduce fuel burn by 3.6 percent from the 2000 launch specification and is well below international standards on key emissions. It remains one of the most popular engines in the GE portfolio.”

More than 1,500 GE90-115B engines have been ordered by customers for their Boeing 777-300ERs, 777-200LRs and 777 Freighters. At 115,000 pounds of thrust, the GE90-115B engine includes such performance-enhancing features as three-dimensional aerodynamic (3-D aero) compressor and wide-chord, swept composite fan blades for greater efficiency. The dual annular combustor emits no more than 40 percent of the hydrocarbons allowed by today’s international standards.

Snecma of France and IHI Corporation of Japan are revenue-sharing participants in the GE90 program.

The GE90-115B engine is part of GE’s “ecomagination” product portfolio — GE’s commitment to implementing innovative, cost-effective technologies that enhance the customers’ environmental and operating performance.

Qatar Airways, the State of Qatar’s national airline, has seen rapid growth in just 17 years of operations, to the point where today it is flying a modern fleet of 134 aircraft to 144 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North American and South America. Qatar Airways recently joined the oneworld Alliance, becoming the only major Gulf carrier to join a global airline alliance, enabling its customers to benefit from almost a thousand airports in more than 150 countries, with 14,000 daily departures. Qatar Airways has orders worth over US$50 billion for more than 300 aircraft.

GE Aviation, an operating unit of GE, is a world-leading provider of jet, turboprop and turboshaft engines, components and integrated systems for commercial, military, business and general aviation aircraft. GE Aviation has a global service network to support these offerings.
