DUBAI– The 24th edition of INDEX and the 13th edition of workspace at INDEX concluded today(May 22nd) with the announcement of the winner of the 6th Contemporary Majlis Design Competition People’s Choice Award. The Majlis project The Global Majlis, designed by Tangram Gulf, was chosen by 40 per cent of INDEX visitors who voted, as the 2014 winner from four finalist projects.
“All building materials and design elements are selected to reflect core preoccupations of sustainability. Seating arrangements is inspired by the shape and flow of the desert dunes, focused on a central divan shaped and contoured to form a representation of UAE surrounded by other countries”, added Laila Hankir, Interior Designer TangramGulf.
Visitors to the show cast their votes in this year’s awards to provide a second winner in the competition, following the judging panel’s decision to award Majlis 3 a’m by Intercon on Monday. The judges for Monday’s award were: Pavalli Dean, Director, Pavalli Dean Interiors; Rob Canning, Retail Area Manager, Four Frontiers; Richard Wagner, Sustainability Consultant & Partner, Wanders Architects; Hamad Khoory, Architect & Partner, LOCI architecture+design; Hani Fallaha, Architect & Partner, LOCI architecture+design; Ashok Raghakrishnan, Architect and Preethi Sreedhara, Architect.
The Majlis, a traditional seating area featured in Arabic interior design plays a significant role in Arab culture and heritage. With the Contemporary Majlis Design Competition People’s Choice Award INDEX offers design professionals the chance to rethink the Majlis by giving it a contemporary, avant-garde and green perspective.
