Awsaj Academy hosts Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder workshop

DOHA – Awsaj Academy hosted its sixth workshop of the year to inform parents about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The training session was presented by two experts from the rehabilitation services department at Rumailah Hospital.

ADHD is a behavioural disorder that is characterised by a short attention span, excessive impulsiveness, and inappropriate hyperactivity. Symptoms of hyperactivity, which include inattentive behaviour, will in most cases cause some impairment in social, academic, or occupational settings. For this reason, it is important for parents and educators to work together and support students who display these symptoms.

Participants at the workshop learned about the medical causes of ADHD, as well as the various pharmaceutical and counselling treatment options. They also learned how ADHD can affect a student’s education and what interventions may be necessary in schools and at home to ensure a pupil with ADHD can perform at their highest potential.

Awsaj Academy believes parental guidance and involvement is critical to a child’s development, and has a significant impact on a student’s academic and social achievement.

It is part of the Academy’s mission to reach out to parents, so as to ensure they have the information they need to support and benefit their children. Therefore, Awsaj Academy works to involve parents in activities such as workshops, support groups, and volunteering activities.
To date, over 400 parents have attended Awsaj Academy workshops, finding them useful and willing to participate in future ones.

Awsaj Academy is a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development. It is a K-12 specialised school that addresses the needs of students with learning challenges, an outreach centre that provides evaluation and professional development services to the community, and a Centre for Education Research and Development that conducts and promotes education research and reform initiatives that benefit all students, including those with academic challenges. –QNA
